Savannah, Georgia is a delightful small city just across the state line from South Carolina. It is steeped in history dating back before the Revolutionary War and it played a major role in the Civil War as well. Many of the standing buildings date back many years and all of them are purported to be haunted. Savannah is rife with ghosts.

There are also many, many different tours of the city from dinner on a river boat to a classic walking tour of the haunted venues. None of these attracted me. Savannah For Morons did.

It’s a 90-minute trolley tour led by two comedic guides Dani and Dannie (not real names) who cover a little history and mostly crack wise and make fun of you and your home town as compared to Savannah. It’s all for laughs and the laughs are plentiful. They had to be the day we went because this tour was detoured by history itself.

Just as we were to load the tour trolley, all the streets in the area where the tour launches were blocked off. It seems that Vice President Harris and her running mate Tim Walz were motorcading to a campaign rally right through the heart of Savannah. This was prior to their interview with CNN’s Dana Bash We had to wait, partially in the rain, for the two campaign busses and the seven or so Secret Service vehicles plus a host of police cars and motorcycles to pass before the tour trolley could get to us.

But 45 minutes late we got started and while we did indeed see some historic sites, mostly we were entertained by the improvisational comedy, as well as the scripted jokes about the city (outdoor drinking is allowed here). We sang along and each of the tour guests had to say their name and city of origin, each of which elicited funny remarks from the tour guides. They were wild!

Now we are in the area because we are playing golf and taking short game lessons at the Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island—a great place to spend a few days if you are a golfer, but nothing in Hilton Head can prepare you for the craziness of this tour in Savannah. I cannot recommend this highly enough. It’s nuts and they even bought us drinks halfway through the tour at a local Irish pub, of which, we were told, there are many—Irish and pubs.

I am not sure that a Houston For Morons would work as well as the important sites in Houston are so geographically separate. Not here. Everything in the older parts of the city is close, quaint, beautiful, and haunted.

By the end of the trip, the Danis had us saying. “this is the most haunted building in Savannah” pretty frequently.

For history, sightseeing, great restaurants and a lot of laughs, Savannah is terrific. This tour is hard to beat. Go.

  1. Savannah Town Council needs you in commercials! Every time that we have been to Savannah we have enjoyed the funky nature of the city. The art museums are terrific! And, there are some excellent restaurants. The Savannah School of the Arts is pervasive and a great addition to town. So, happy that you enjoyed your visit and hope that you get a hole in one at Hilton Head!!!

    1. No aces this time, but we had a ball.

Restaurants in Savannah were great. Vic’s on the River and Cotton & Rye

The tour guides on the tour were from that school, I believe.
