Podcast #12: East Meets West: The Healing Power Of Acupuncture With Dr. Demetrios Papadopoulos
By
Leonard Zwelling
There can be doubt that acupuncture is here to stay in the practice of healing in the United States. Yet, it is the unusual acupuncturist who is also a fully-trained Western physician.
Demetrios Papadopoulus is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Duke Medical School who practiced family medicine in South Carolina before deciding to train in both integrative medicine and acupuncture in his sixties, after 37 years of practice. Now he practices acupuncture. He also serves on the Duke Medical Alumni Council with my wife, Dr. Eugenie Kleinerman whose idea it was to have him as a guest on A New Prescription. Dr. Kleinerman agreed to introduce him and guide us through the initial questions about what acupuncture is and how the philosophy surrounding the practice differs from the one that guides traditional Western medicine.
In our podcast we will cover the scientific evidence supporting the use of acupuncture, the specific conditions it helps, and how it can be combined with Western medicine to provide significant benefits for patients.
